چکیده
We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30 square aperture that collects all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong broad O VI component of FWHM ∼ 3500 kms and two narrow O VI λλ1031/1037 components of ∼ 350 kms. The C III λ977 and N III λ991 emission lines in this spectrum can be fitted with a narrow component of FWHM ∼ 1000 kms and a broad one of ∼ 2500 kms. Another set of seven spatially resolved spectra were made using a long slit of 1. 25×20, at steps of∼ 1 along the axis of the emissionline cone. We find that (1) Major emission lines in the FUSE wavelength range consist of a broad and a narrow component; (2) There is a gradient in the velocity field for the narrow O VI component of ∼ 200 kms from ∼ 2 southwest of the nucleus to ∼ 4 northeast. A similar pattern is also observed with the broad O VI component, with a gradient of ∼ 3000 kms. These are consistent with 1 Based on observations made with the NASA-CNES-CSA Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), which is operated for NASA by the Johns Hopkins University under NASA contract NAS5-32985, and observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities of Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555. Resolved Ultraviolet Spectra of the High - Velocity Nuclear Outflow of NGC 1068
We present ultraviolet emission-line maps of the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 1068. The maps span 115–318 nm, the biconical ionization cone, several posited jet/ISM interactions, and the compact knots whose optical spectra we reported previously resemble kinematically the quasar Associated Absorption Line systems. Across the NLR, we find that ultraviolet flux ratios are consistent with photo...
متن کاملTesting the Seyfert unification theory : Chandra HETGS observations of NGC 1068
We present spatially resolved Chandra HETGS observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. Xray imaging and high resolution spectroscopy are used to test the Seyfert unification theory. Fe Kα emission is concentrated in the nuclear region, as are neutral and ionized continuum reflection. This is consistent with reprocessing of emission from a luminous, hidden X-ray source by the obscuring molec...
متن کاملOverview: the Role of Agn Outflows in Galaxy Evolution
We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra’s superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the ‘ionization cone’ in any AGN, and use th...
متن کاملKinematics of the narrow - line region of NGC 1068 ?
We investigated the kinematics of the Narrow Line Region of NGC 1068. In order to study the kinematics and to determine whether the unusual broad line width can be attributed to motion of NLR clouds in a deep gravitational potential or to expanding shocks, we carried out spatially resolved echelle spectroscopy. High spectral resolution enables the identification of individual clouds in long sli...

We present high-resolution soft-X-ray spectra of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, taken with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). Its rich emission-line spectrum is dominated by recombination in a warm plasma (bright, narrow radiative recombination continua provide the " smoking gun "), which is ph...
